The Greek government will begin disbursement of financial support to people and businesses hit by the wildfires in the next two weeks, along with the assessment process by the Infrastructure and Transport ministery, Greek Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said on Friday.

In comments made to Mega TV, Staikouras said that enterprises hit by the fires will be offered the first financial support up to 20% of their turnover. The Finance minister noted that the government has announced a series of relief measures such as suspension of tax and social insurance payments, financial support to unemployed, freezing payment of an special property tax and of a state loan offered during the pandemic.

Staikouras reiterated that a budget target for a 3.6% GDP growth rate this year was fully feasible, maybe even conservative, and noted that tax revenue was up 2.0 billion euros in the first seven months of 2021 compared with 2020, e-transactions were up 27.4%, building activity jumped 42% in the first five months of 2021 and tourist arrivals were down 36.4% compared with 2019 levels.
